Should Real Madrid offer Sergio Ramos a one or two year contract?

A big season for Sergio Ramos and Real Madrid

Sergio Ramos' contract at Real Madrid expires in the summer of 2021.
Los Blancos are yet to agree a renewal to the defender's deal and they can't allow negotiations to reach January - when other clubs can hold talks with him.
The question is, how long do they extend his contract by?

Carlos Gonzalez's opinion: One year

Many people think Real Madrid should extend Ramos' contract until 2023. I, on the other hand, believe there's time to do that later and that the club should just give him a one-year extension for now.

Ramos is 34 years old and his performances have been hugely important this season, but the club can't predict the future by giving him a two-year deal worth 26 million euros.

No one is disputing his charisma, his leadership and his ability as a centre-back, but the club must always come before any player and giving a player a new deal until he's 37 would be a mistake.
If Ramos' performances drop, who will the fans hold responsible? Logically, Florentino Perez, who must stand his ground for the good of the club and offer his captain a one-year extension.
Depending on his performances, you can always give him another extension.

Juan de la Concha's opinion: Two years

Unlike Cristiano Ronaldo at Juventus, Sergio Ramos hasn't shown any signs of ageing.
In fact, he's returned from the break in the season in better shape than his teammates and opponents. He's been faultless and Florentino can't afford to lose a player like him by trying to save a year of his contract.
Other than what he brings as a centre-back on the pitch, the leadership he has in the squad is something else. The squad believes in him and the younger players seen him as a role model. When he speaks, the rest listen.

You don't have to go further than look at Raphael Varane's transformation when he plays alongside Ramos and when he doesn't.
In the second leg against Manchester City in the Champions League, there will be the latest example of how much Real Madrid miss his presence on the pitch.

Historically, Real Madrid's legendary players have had cold and distant farewells and now there's the chance to change that. I can't see Sergio Ramos saying goodbye to football at any other club than Real Madrid.
